Natalie Draper writes music for a wide variety of ensembles and idioms, as she strongly believes that all genres of music are connected and can be relevant for the concert stage. Much of Natalie's writing incorporates a warped sense of tonality and various other harmonic structures as a way of exploring nostalgia and musical drama. Natalie is also interested in promoting new music, especially the music of women. When she is not composing, Natalie works part-time as a music theory and composition instructor at the Levine School of Music at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland and writes entries for Alphabet Soup, a new music blog that she co-authors with composer Sarah Hersh.
Natalie received her undergraduate degree in music from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and her master’s degree in composition from University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her music has been programmed at several festivals, symposiums, and conferences, including Brevard Music Festival, Midwest Composers Symposiums, GAMMA-UT, MusicX, and SEAMUS. She was an artist-in-residence at the Ucross Foundation in the winter of 2010. Natalie is currently pursuing her DMA degree, studying composition with Oscar Bettison at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Her recent teachers include Michael Fiday, Joel Hoffman, and Frances Thompson McKay. Natalie is affiliated with ASCAP.
